Como has installied a giant information screen on top of London's BT Tower, all within a challenging 11 week timescale.
Concieved by Imagination Europe Limited, the 360 degree LED screen - believed to be the highest of its kind in Europe and the Americas - will be used as an information band. Messages shown will be visible from various locations across the city.
The screen is over 280 square meters, equivalent to half a football pitch, and is wrapped around the tower's 36th and 37th floors, 167 meters above street level. At this height, the screen has to endure harsh weather conditions, including hurricane force winds. It has been fully tested at the Jules Verne wind tunnel in Nantes, France, for combined climatic effects including wind speeds of up to 190km per hour as well as rain, snow and high temperatures.
The screen is made up of 177 separate panels and has 529,750 LEDs. The installation of the 3.6 tonne screen at the top of the tower has been an extremely challenging construction and engineering task, involving 114 construction workers and engineers who completed the work in 30,600 man hours. nearly two and a half miles of power, lighting and electric cabling was installed.
BT Group's marketing and brand director, Suzi Williams said: "As one of the most iconic and well-known landmarks in London, it's only fitting that the BT Tower will be playing such an essential role in informing and engaging people across the capital. The BT Tower symbolises BT's place at the heart of the nation and it's fantastic that we're returning it to its original role - as an information tower."
Como director, John Morriss commented: "We are delighted to have been involved in such a unique project for a client like BT. All credit must go to the Como team for rising to the challenge and achieving project completion inspite of a challenging programme."
