A Royal opening for Ashmolean Museum

07/12/2009
Her Majesty The Queen has officially opened the new Ashmolean Museum. The Ashmolean re-opened to the public on 7 November, following a major multi-million pound redevelopment led by a Mace project and programme management team.
Her Majesty visited a number of the galleries before visiting the rooftop restaurant, where she was formally introduced to architect Rick Mather and Steve Tighe of Mace Group. She stopped to talk to school children in the Education Centre before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the official opening.
The new building, designed by Rick Mather Architects, has been universally acclaimed by both the international media and members of the public. On its opening weekend it attracted 22,000 visitors and is currently averaging 6,000 visitors a day.Â
